Source Spotlight: Honduras
We’re proud to spotlight our newest addition: a remarkable coffee from Honduras that’s as rich in flavor as it is in purpose.
Coffee production in Honduras has been a vital part of Honduras culture that has been cultivated over centuries. Dating back to the late 18th century when European traders introduced coffee to the region. Initially overshadowed by banana cultivation, coffee became a significant crop in the mid-20th century. The establishment of the Honduran Coffee Institute (IHCAFE) in 1970 played a pivotal role in promoting quality and expanding the coffee industry. Despite challenges like Hurricane Mitch in 1998, which devastated much of the coffee crop, and the coffee leaf rust epidemic in the 2010s, Honduras has emerged as a leading coffee producer. Today, it ranks as the 6th largest coffee producer globally, contributing approximately 3.9% to world coffee production .
Grown on the farms of Café Amor y Fe in the Monticellos region of Honduras, this coffee embodies the perfect harmony of altitude, climate, and care. The cold nights and high altitudes of the region allow the cherries to ripen slower and develop its distinct characteristic sweetness. After the cherries are harvested, they go through a natural honey drying process, which allows the sweetness of the fruit to infuse within the bean. This creates a more fruity and fuller body compared to other drying processes. But what makes this bean truly special is the heart behind it—the grower who nurtures every plant with passion and purpose, Salomón.
Salomón not only produces exceptional coffee, but also invests deeply in his community, from providing fair and better wages for workers, to providing women with jobs to promote their well-being. The proceeds from his farm directly support Llevando la Luz de Cristo Hogar de Niños, a local orphanage, providing shelter, education, and hope for children who otherwise might not have access to these basic necessities. This direct connection means that every cup you enjoy contributes to a brighter future for the next generation in Honduras.
At Refined, we’re committed to sourcing coffee responsibly and building relationships that matter. Direct trade allows us to work closely with growers, ensuring fair pricing and high-quality beans while creating meaningful connections. This new Honduras coffee is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared values.
Not only are we proud of this sourcing, we’re proud of the coffee in the cup. This bean has quickly become one of our favorites, and one I find myself brewing multiple times a day. We’ve found it to have a hint of honey with notes of fruit and chocolate. All the makings of a delicious cup of coffee. Try it out yourself and let us know if you agree.
